We always enjoy logo design projects, and our latest was for Plymouth based electricians Wright & Owen Ltd. They are a successful, well established company and wanted to portray these qualities, whilst also wanting to have a fresh, modern image. In order to do this we went for a logo type name, rather than the traditional (and perhaps even cliched?) ideas of plugs, sparks and other electrical images!
As you can see from the finalised logo, Wright & Owen now have a ‘corporate’ feel about them- a simple logo that defines them as being well established and high quality, but with a modern, progressive feel.
But how did we achieve this? With any logotype obviously the choice of font is going to have an enormous effect on the tone of the logo. For this (for the W & O) we chose VAG Rounded- a font originally developed for Volkswagen AG in 1979. It is unusual in that the terminal of every stroke is rounded. It is a clean, simple and friendly looking font. The rounded edges and its soft friendly feeling make it an excellent choice for logo design- especially in this case where our clients’ business involves a lot of “people” interaction. The evolution of the ‘O’ into an on/off switch really just establishes the type of business that it is, in a subtle way.
The finalised logo is what you see here, but this is only produced after client feedback and many rounds of revisions- some involving drastic changes, at other times just minor tweaks, but each step refines the logo a little more and in the end you have a fantastic logo that best represents the clients’ business! Here you can see a before image and then some of the revisions of the logo throughout the process.

So, there you have it- an insight into the development of a logo design… and as you can see from the graphic as the top of the newsletter, this logo is ready to be rolled out for branding across the company! If you would like to see other logo design projects we have carried out, you can do so in our online portfolio.

I actually like it… and that's coming from Mr. Hyper-Critical-Ex-Graphic Design lecturer
Nice.
Except…. nah, joking.
Thanks! That means a lot coming from people in the business. It has been many weeks hard work – now its time for the hard work of rolling out the branding across multi touch points – vans / mouse mats / uniforms / letterheads / web !
They are a good company – seem to invest in their people apprenticeships etc. been doing so for nearly 40 years
Your mu:kau site looks interesting – I had not seen it before !
